INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES ON INTERNAL FIRES AND USE OF RESPIRATORY DEVICES

INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES ON INTERNAL FIRES AND USE OF RESPIRATORY DEVICES

The course provides firefighting team members with specific training to handle internal fires and situations of great heat productions.

Use of respiratory protective devices

Theoretical aspects

  • Recognizing cases where the self-contained breathing apparatus is necessary:
  • High temperature air
  • Suboxygenated atmospheres
  • Mixture of air and toxic products
  • Breathing physiology:
  • Airway system (how human breathing works)
  • Mechanisms that control breathing frequence and air consumption
  • Respiratory muscles and types of breathing (thoracic, diaphragmatic and clavicular)

  • Breathing techniques
  • r-ebt
  • skip breathing
  • breathing aimed at the intervention performance

Practical sessions

  • Respiratory protective devices wearing/removing
  • Breathing through repiratory protective devices
  • Self-contained breating apparatus wearing (above head)
  • Self-contained breathing apparatus wearing (body sides)
  • 5 pints mask wearing
  • Ergonomic regulation of the self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Performance test sequences
  • Crossing tight spaces without the breathing apparatus
  • Checks on devices before the intervention
  • Devices wearing/removing
  • Practical session in an environment filled with non-toxic smoke
  • Familiarization with all the devices
  • Breathing tests, use of respiratory protective devices

  • Hygiene and healthiness standards
  • Contaminated PPE management after intervention

Simulation of fire in a multi-storey building

  • Preparation activities out of the building
  • Equipment and breathing apparatus checks
  • Test on fire extinction techniques which will be used inside the building
  • Instructions on the imminent intervention simulation
  • Pre-entry breathing

  • Activities inside the multi-storey building simulator (the scenario will be agreed with the customer, there are more than one possibility: fire, search and rescue…)
  • Positioning out of the building
  • Combustible material triggering
  • Start of intervention activities
  • Entry into the building
  • Use of fire extinction techniques (previously acquired)
  • Direct fire extinction attack on the combustible material

  • Outdoor Activities after the intervention inside the building

  • PPE removal (they ensure top-level protection)
  • Final debriefing
